Artist Statement
I use landscape as a way to examine our complicated relationship with
the natural world.
Of course, all "landscapes" are fictional. The moment that the natural
world is depicted in a song, a photograph or a painting, it becomes an
interpretation, an artifact. Each moment that is described is a manifestation
of the author's voice. A story is told, over and over again. This story
can be mythopoetic or journalistic, depending on the author. What remains
in the mind of an audience is a deep connection with a common memory,
the memory of the natural world.
What began 15 years ago as a conceptual investigation for me has become
a deeply personal and very painterly pursuit. I am still finding new
ways to keep myself satisfied as a painter and still finding new ways
to look at nature.
